Large gateway 30 mph signs mark the start of the speed limit. The first lamp post is 274 metres into the restricted area. There are no repeater signs or road markings indicating the limit. Two of the first five lamp posts are buried in the tree line with the light totally obscured by the branches, so they cannot be seen and do not throw light onto the carriageway when lit. The lamp posts are all drab, dirty dark green, so are inconspicuous. Direction 11 of the Traffic Signs & General Directions, as amended, states that speed limit signs cannot be placed along a road where there is carriageway lighting not more than 183 metres apart, and which is subject to a 30 mph speed limit. A 30 mph limit applies where there are three or more lamps throwing light on the carriageway and placed not more than 183 metres apart. Is the speed limit legal and enforceable please? .

I suppose if you were caught speeding in the first 274 metres, and had not passed a 30 sign before entering the stretch of road, you might have a case. If you can only enter that stretch of road by driving past a 30 sign, I think you could reasonably be expected to remember about it for 274 metres.

Once you are up to the street lights, you are undoubtedly in a 30 limit. It doesn't really matter That they're green or overgrown. Their casting light is irrelevant - after all, the limit still applies when they're switched off during the day.

Ermmm. There are plenty of lit roads with higher limits than 30, even many M'ways. Your rule is the other way round - if a road has a 30 limit it must be correctly lit. Until recently (it may still be) there was an expensive (footballer-style) village in Cheshire without a 30 limit because residents did not want it lit.
