Buying an Aston - which model is best?

"I am currently in the market for a new vehicle, I am looking at either an Aston DB9 or a V12 Vantage S Roadster. Which would be the better car to live with day to day, with daily drives up country roads and very little motorway driving?"
You need deep pockets to run an Aston Martin. Very high maintenance. A friend ran Peter Crouch's old DB9 as his daily runner for a few years. But I'd get a Jaguar XF instead, or even an XK if buying 2nd hand. My favourite XK was the 5.0 V8 roadster, not the XKR. If you go for an XF, remember there is hardly any luggage space in the roadster.

Should I buy a cheaper Aston Martin from a non-franchised dealer?

"I am about to buy an Aston Martin V8 Vantage. I have a choice of two almost identical cars with full service history and with 16,000 and 18,000 miles on them. One is with an Aston Martin dealer and is offered at £45,000, and one is with a non-franchised dealer, has all the same specification but is only £37,000? The comfort of an Aston Martin dealer is reassuring, yet the £8000 premium is hard to swallow. Which car would you go for, assuming they are almost the same?"
Use the fact that one car is £37,000 to negotiate the car at the Aston dealer down as much as possible. If he is keen to make a sale, he will first of all investigate the history of the cheaper car from central Aston Martin records and might find out it has been crashed or something. If not, he should be prepared to deal. If he won't deal, at least you should have some more information about the cheaper car that you would not otherwise have got. On the other hand, if he has the funds, the dealer might snatch the £37,000 car from the vendor, then re-offer it at £45,000. The best guys to tell you what it is really worth are father and son dealers Tom Hartley.

Where can our son learn to drive his Aston Martin Vantage company car safely?

"My 31-year-old son (who currently drives a Fiesta) has been told that his company car for his new job starting next month will be an Aston Martin Vantage. Lucky sod. Can you recommend a suitable course to keep him and it in one piece? He lives in Brighton."
He will be able to get professional road and track instruction at any racetrack, so the best thing to do is make enquiries at the track most convenient to him. Porsche has its own small track, skidpan and 'ice hill' at Silverstone. His nearest circuit is Goodwood. Mercedes-Benz has a selection of tracks and some very good, very calm instructors at the MB Driving Academy at MB World. He's going to be paying eyewatering BIK tax on that Aston Martin.
