You're wrong about the effect of coasting on fuel economy.

Twice in the past year you have answered a similar question to 'is it economical to coast in neutral down hill'. Both times your answer is wrong! Of course you are correct that in neutral the engine is using fuel, whereas in gear with your foot off the accelerator it is using no fuel, but you have overlooked the fact that with the wheels driving the engine there is huge resistance, in my case two litres of diesel resistance. Whereas in neutral, downhill, the resistance is just wind and rolling resistance. The difference that this makes is that you can go very very much further in neutral than you can with the car in gear. If it is a long or steep hill where the car can run in neutral under its own weight and not being slowed down by engine resistance, put it in neutral. For short distances such as approaching traffic lights/roundabouts/crossroads/etc, leave it in gear with your foot off. I drive a 2-litre Citroen Picasso, and over the last 47,000 miles I have achieved nearly 10 per cent better consumption than government statistics. Can you better that?

This advice comes from all the Eco driving experts I have ever talked to. Following it increased the mpg of my FIAT 500 1.2 petrol from 54.5mpg to 64.2mpg.
