I can't open my BMW 523's door with the key or remote - any ideas?

I own a 523 E39, a stunning car. Unfortunately I'm unable to open the driver's door using my key or remote. I have checked all the fuses and the relays all seem ok. I have disconnected and reconnected the battery, but to no avail.
