My Ford Focus' speedometer has started dropping to zero. What's wrong with it?

My 51-plate Ford Focus' speedo has just started dropping to zero while driving along. The rest of the dash is ok, the rev counter is fine and the mileage still shows up, its just the speedo and it seems to be staying at zero longer each time it does it. Any ideas?

Standard fault with the speed sensor in the final drive. An oil gasket fails. This costs about £100 to replace.
