Are there any clean diesels out there?

There are a number of articles on the harm that diesel does to the environment and people. I am looking to buy a car to last the rest of my life, hopefully, and wonder whether there are advances in diesel production that can prevent or mitigate emission of particulates and nitrous oxide. Or should i go with petrol?

Stick with petrol. The burning of diesel naturally puts out more unburned hydrocarbon particulates and the only ways to stop that are various kinds of filters attached to the engine that cost a fortune and don't last very long.
