Why is my mother's Mazda MX-5 misfiring?

My mum has a 10-year-old 1.8 Mazda MX-5 Icon. It's been looked after very well, and is in generally good condition, though it doesn't go very far. She has had a problem though recently. The car is not firing on all cylinders. I thought perhaps it had something to do with the ignition coils, but some useless mechanics couldn't find anything wrong with it when they plugged into their PC. I did suggest that they take it for a run, as it is intermittent, but I'm sure they didn't. I then took it to our family mechanic, who found that it was a problem with loose coil sensors, leading to loss of power. To cut a long story short, the problem persists. I don't like the thought of my Mum getting stranded at her age, and would like the problem rectified. Your wise recommendations would be much appreciated - have you ever heard of this problem before with MX-5s?

Golfs had a coil problem from fitting poor quality coils, the insulation of which broke down. Maybe your MX-5 needs a complete new set of leads, coils and ignition amplifier.
