Need a used car for high mileage motorway driving

I am looking for a car for high mileage motorway use. Approx 30k miles a year. Preferably automatic. Considered BMW 3 or 5 series (including coupe), Merc C and E class, Jag XF, Audi A4/5/6, VW Passatt CC/Saloon, Volvo S60, also considering XC60, Audi Q3/5, X3, Lexus IS, CT.

Have about £17k to spend. Need reliability, but also cost effective servicing, tyres, brakes, clutches, etc etc. What do you recommend?

The Private Hire driver's favourite seems to be the Mercedes E220CDI. They get good reliability and fuel economy. Has to be on 16-inch wheels with 225/60 profile tyres for best comfort and tyre life. Obviously take care that the cart you buy is not already a high mileage ex private hire car that has been clocked. Check service history very carefully.
