Would a Rover 75 make a good first car?

I'm 17 and working on passing my driving test soon. I've got a little bit of money saved up and want to buy my first car. Ideally I want to spend £3000 on the car and insurance. obviously, if I could spent less, that would be great. What do you suggest I buy? I quite like old Rovers (75) and Jaguars (S-Type) but worry that both are beyond my budget.

75s are so well proportioned they will eventually become classics and many people regard good first generation 2.0CDTs and 2.5V6s Connoisseurs in Wedgwood blue with cream leather as classics already. But they are £5000. 'Banger' 75s aren't classics and the money to bring them up to standard far exceeds their potential value.

One doesn't make sense as a first car. If you're into old Rovers, better to start with something small like a Rover 111i or 114i that were a lot better than the Metros they were based on. Or even a Rover 214i.
