Why is the ABS light on my 308 permanently on?

I have a problem with a 2009 (59 plate) Peugeot 308 1.6 diesel. The car drives fine but I now have a ABS brake fault. I have taken it to my mechanic who says that it's a specialist job. The diagnostics state that it's the ABS pump - "stating recirculation pump electrical fault permanent." I have been reading frantically and seen some people saying that this might not be the ABS pump but the control unit or brain for the car. Can you help?

Might be a wheel sensor. But most likely to be the brake pressure sensor in the ATE Teves Mk 60 ABS/ESP module. www.ecutesting.com can fix it for about £400, but you have to send them the module.
