Engine warning light is on - will my car fail the MoT?

The engine warning light on my 2002 Toyota Rav4 came on a while back. I had this diagnosed and it's due to the catalytic converter. The garage is saying that MoT checks do not include engine lights in pre-2003 cars, so it should pass without getting this fixed. Is that correct?

If the car uses a petrol engine then the garage is correct, the engine warning light is a testable item on vehicles first used on or after 1 July 2003 only.

If there is a serious fault with the catalytic converter then the car may fail on emissions, however.
