Ford Mondeo ESP warning light - what does it mean?

I drive a 2009 Ford Mondeo 2.0 diesel Every now and again the ESP light comes on the dash, with a message stating "engine malfunction". When this happens the car goes into limp mode and won't rev past 2500rpm. Do you know what could cause this?

If you have a warning light then it would be best at this stage to carry out a diagnostic check and see what fault code you get ( should be P ---- 4 numbers)
From this fault code you can then identify where the problem lies (could be one of the car's many sensors).
