Which petrol car has a balance of comfort, performance and economy?

I was about to order a Volvo C30 in D3 or D4 form when I read your reply to a letter in yesterday's Telegraph. You do not recommend a diesel when a lot of the use is for short runs. I do not rate either of the petrol engines in the C30, so I have been considering the Volkswagen Scirocco or Eos as an alternative with the 1.4-litre petrol engine. Which do you think is best and should I be considering anything else with a reasonable balance of comfort, performance and economy?
