Has the head gasket failed on my Golf?

The performance of my 1998 Volkswagen Golf hasn't been great of late. I've found white gunk under the oil cap and when driving at 70mph for five mins on the dual carriageway, the oil light comes on, yet there's plenty of oil in there. Is the head gasket on the way out?

Could be. The way to check properly is to get the cooling system pressure tested.
