Car on SORN - why have I got a tax bill?

I bought a car for spares and on the day of purchase I checked on the DVLA website to make sure it was declared SORN as the seller informed me it was.

Today, almost two months later, I've received a letter saying I owe nearly £35 in unpaid tax, even though the car is in pieces. The DVLA said that once a vehicle is sold the SORN declaration becomes null and void and the new registered keeper has to do it again. Is this correct?

Yes, that is correct. The SORN declaration has to be made by each keeper.
