BMW 5 Series missing gears

I have a BMW 5 Series diesel (2009 model) and have noticed that the auto box is missing a gear. It is also making a piercing screeching noise. Lifting the power it seemed to quietened down. I was wondering if it was gearbox or torque converter? Any thoughts?

Sounds like it. Get it to a member of www.fedauto.co.uk Could also be the alternator or the water pump, but if it is one of those it would occur if you revved the engine while the transmission was in Park or Neutral.
