Filled diesel car with petrol - what damage have I done?

My father-in-law recently filled his 2010 Mazda 6 diesel with petrol. After driving up the road, the car stopped and wouldn't restart. He was towed into a Mazda main dealer and the fuel has been drained. What damage do you think he's done to the car?

If he's lucky, no damage. If he's unlucky and the car needs a new high pressure pump and injectors it could cost him £4,000. If he's lucky it's vital to exclusively use a high lubricity diesel such as Shell V-Power Nitro Plus from now on.
