Should we change our XC60 or keep it?

My wife and I run a 60-plate (Nov 2010) Volvo XC60 D5 (215HP) AWD Geartronic SE which we've had since new.

We both like the car very much and to date we have had no problems with it, although average MPG from new is only 33.9 which we think is a little lower than it should be.

The car has now done 64,000 miles and the big question is: do we keep it for another 3 to 4 years or do we change it now before it gets any older or accumulates too high a mileage for a decent trade-in?

We need a totally flat load space of similar size with no lip, AWD or 4WD, automatic transmission, 5 doors and decent performance.

Our annual mileage is now down to 12 - 14,000 so we think a petrol engine would probably be better than diesel.

Do you think changing the car now is the best way to proceed and if so, what should we be looking at to change to and what can we expect to get for our car?

The problem with this is it's now at the sort of age and mileage when bills are going to start rolling in: Tyres, brakes, timing belt, waterpump and anything else that might go wrong will all cost money that you won't ever get back. There aren't many 4WD SUV petrol models unless you go for something nuts like a Mercedes GL63 AMG.

Almost all diesels now use AdBlue to meet EU6, which means an AdBlue tank sitting where a spare wheel should be. Your best bets are probably a new Hyundai Santa Fe or the new KIA Sorento, or a BMW X3. The one 4WD SUV that manages EU6 without AdBlue is the Mazda CX-5 2.2 Skyactiv diesel.
