Should I buy a used Passat?

I need a used car and would like a Volkswagen Passat. I've read the 1.9 TDI engine is more desirable than the 2.0 TDI. Can you confirm that this is the case and why please?

I'm prepared to spend up to £7000 on a good model. Is there any thing that I should be looking at with the range of models 2006-2010 ?
