Free insurance offer isn't what it seems

Volkswagen has refused to give me their one year free insurance on a new Up, which I am taking delivery of next week. The reason is due to a "knock for knock" accident in a supermarket car park two and a half years ago. This is fair enough, but shouldn't the salesman at the dealer have pointed out the restrictions on the insurance when I was arranging the purchase?

In that case you can refuse the Up. Any fuss, report the dealership to the Financial Conduct Authority because you are correct. The salesman should have explained the terms in detail. If they then offer you a £300 discount in lieu of the insurance offer, that would be fair.
