The replacement water pump on my Vauxhall Vectra is noisy - is this normal?

The water pump on my 2.2 petrol Vectra C 2003 model was replaced by my local Vauxhall dealer at 56,000 miles due to a water leak. The first replacement was noisy, with a high-pitched sound when revving the engine and driving. When I complained, there was no problem in having another pump fitted at no extra charge as the new part was diagnosed as faulty. But the second new pump is noisy, too - although not as much as the first replacement - and when I queried it I was told that this sometimes happens and it's nothing to worry about. Should a new water pump be noisy?

A new pump should be as quiet as the old pump that's been replaced if it's of the same make and quality. It's worth posting something in Technical Matters in the Backroom at www.honestjohn.co.uk which is free. Someone might have a similar problem or be able to shed some light on what's causing this. However, if the pump appears to be working correctly, it might just be something you have to live with unfortunately.

Far better than previous Vectra. Now with decent handling and an excellent ride. Plenty of safety kit. Roomy in the front. Big boot. Good looks.
