Should my Volkswagen Touran's door and boot locks be malfunctioning at six years old?

I have a Volkswagen Touran which is now six years old. We have owned it from new and it has only done approx 30,000 miles. About six months ago, the handle that you pull the boot open from the outside stopped working. This cost us £150 to repair. About five weeks ago the boot would not shut. This time the catch inside had gone, costing us another £100. Now the rear passenger door on the driver's side will not lock. I have been informed by my local garage that it is the catch and motor that has gone and, including labour, will cost £220. We have had Volkswagens for years but are disappointed, as we do not feel that the car is particularly old. Should these things be going wrong at six years old?

That does sound excessive considering the car is only six years old and, as the Touran is a family car, you'd expect that the tailgate would get used a lot, so it should be more robust than this. We'd suggest initially writing to Volkswagen customer services in the UK (you'll find the details on their website) and pointing out the problems you've had and how disappointed you are, particularly as you've had Volkswagens before. They'll no doubt try and fob you off, but if you keep contacting them (writing is good as you can copy the letters you've sent) they may come back with an offer to help pay towards the cost. It's also worth asking the Volkswagen garage what they think, as they can often come out on your side which is useful when dealing with the main Volkswagen customer services dept.
