Can I remove the DPF from my Land Rover Defender?

I am on my second Land Rover Defender after owning many saloon cars and two SUVs. The Defender is an excellent, simple vehicle, which was the main reason for purchase. I find that the second Defender has now been fitted with a smaller displacement diesel, now 2.2 litres, but still from the Transit. I also find that it has been fitted with a DPF. As this is a utilitarian vehicle that was designed for mixed use, including mud plugging, will its fitment allow for many short journeys, or will the vehicle still have to undergo long journeys simply to clear the filter? If so, would its removal be to the detriment of the engine, and indeed its warranty? On the first Defender I could just average 30mpg. With the new engine it’s around 25mpg. You can hear a change in tone at times, which I guess is the DPF burning off particulates.

Under Regulation 61A of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 you cannot legally remove the DPF. Defenders are now fitted with the same chain-cam 2.2-litre diesel as the new Ford Ranger and Transit. This is not the same engine as the Freelander II. I have yet to hear of DPF problems on any of these. After the initial trouble, manufacturers generally found ways to make diesel engines heat up faster and burn off their particulates in shorter journeys. But it's still hit and miss. Some succeeded much better than others.
