Why does my Ford C-Max wear tyres so rapidly?

I have a Ford C-Max 2.0TDCI fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres, 235/40 ZR 18 95w. The front tyres need replacing after 16,000 miles with even wear across the tread. This seems a very short tyre life. Is it reasonable? And what replacements would you recommend?

It’s because they are wide, low profile tyres. 205/55 R16s or 205/60 R16s would have lasted much longer, but to swap to them will mean a new set of wheels. A set of TUV-approved 16-inch alloys are £335 from www.tyremen.co.uk and, of course, 16-inch tyres are much cheaper than 18-inch so the overall cost of going down to 16s need not be much more than simply replacing the 18s.
