Are extended warranties worth the money?

Our Volkswagen CC is coming up to three years old and we are being offered an extended, comprehensive warranty by our local dealer for £290 a year or £31 per month. This seems too good to be true as Warranty Direct is quoting more than £500.

Volkswagen is also offering their Ensurance product for free, which includes an accident management service. Should we pay the £290 for the warranty or carry on without it?

Ensurance has the advantage that the car is repaired to Volkswagen retail standards, but the disadvantage is that you never get something for nothing and I guess it must be paid for from the credit hire rates for the courtesy cars while the work is being done. But, read the terms carefully and you may be better off with the warranty. WD's rates are based on the true costs of warranty claims. Volkswagen's own may be supported by the manufacturer/dealer.
