Can you suggest an economical used car that can cover lots of motorway miles?

I currently drive a diesel Smart Passion car which is now approaching three years old and I wish to replace it with a second hand car of about six months old. I do not necessarily require a four seater, but I do need a car that will be economical in respect of fuel and road tax, as well as having a reasonable value after three years. The driving I am currently undertaking involves a good percentage of motorway and I cover 20,000 miles a year. What do you suggest I buy?

20,000 miles a year will cause significant depreciation of any car. But your best bet is probably a discounted or nearly new 2012 model or later Citroen C1 at £5000 - £6000. That's free VED, about 55mpg and cheap maintenance.
