What could be causing our Ford Galaxy to cut out?

Our 1999 2.3-litre petrol Ford Galaxy is suffering from an intermittent lean fuel mixture and cuts out on a fairly regular basis. The dealer wants us to scrap the car, saying it is too expensive to repair, but we are keen to explore every avenue before paying for a new car. Do you have any suggestions?

Check for vacuum leaks in the intake manifold or where the PCV hose hooks to the manifold,,the PCV hose is also a problem on these and the problem will come and go because of the engine moving forward and backwards during acceleration and deceleration.

I would also check the ignition relay to see if all connections are sound.
