What is needed to mend my air con?

We went to get our air con recharged today but got told that there was a problem with the compressor it wasn't kicking in? Could this be something as simple as a fuse or is it going to cost us serious money to get it fixed? This car has cost us a fortune over the last 18 months!

Probably needs a new compressor electromagnetic clutch (about £100), but a dealer will tell you it needs a complete new compressor (about £800).
