When to change oil on a 1 Series?

What is the sensible oil change milage for a 2009 BMW 120D and what is correct volume and grade of oil to use in a complete change. The garage I use seems reluctant to change it based on milage and seem to allow high miles between top up only.

At least every year or at least every 10k miles, whichever comes first.
