Should we sell our SEAT Ibiza or Peugeot 206, and which family car should we replace it with?

My fiancee and I currently have a car each: a 2006 SEAT Ibiza 1.9TDi FR with 72,000 miles, and a 2003 Peugeot 206 1.1 with 48,000 miles. We are looking to sell one and buy a replacement, a slightly larger five-door car as we may start a family once married. Which car should we sell and what do we get as a replacement?

Our budget would be around £15,000. We are looking for a five-door car up to three years old that is economical but enjoyable to drive, and quite stylish. We would be doing an average mileage of around 12,000 a year. I have been thinking along the lines of a used A3, probably the 2.0-litre TDI or nearly-new Volkswagen Golf Mk6 1.4 TSI. I also thought of a Lexus IS. Any suggestions?

Both the Golf and A3 Sportback sound ideal for your needs but the IS is best avoided as it's a saloon only and not very practical. It's also not as enjoyable to drive as either the A3 or Golf. If you want something stylish then a SEAT Leon might be worth considering, or the Honda Civic which has a huge boot and very clever rear seats that fold down and have extra storage underneath. In terms of selling, you'll get more for the Ibiza plus the 206 has fewer miles, so you're right to look at selling the SEAT.

Stylish design. Excellent road manners. Roomy and well-equipped cabin. An easy car to live with and enjoy. Superb value. FR models are the best.
Comfortable and quiet on the move, enjoyable to drive. Nicely trimmed with great attention to detail. 1.4 TSI sweeter to drive than a diesel.
