AWD Kuga tyre changes - all tyres at once?

My 2010 kuga needed its service and also two front tyres for its first MOT. When the car came back from the dealer it suffered vibration at about 2200, 2400 and 2700 rpm. A new injector was fitted under warranty but the fault remained.

Several checks were then carried out and eventually the main dealer in desperation to find an answer to the problem changed the front wheels and put on two wheels from a forecourt car that had similar wear to my rear tyres.

The problem was solved and the only course of action was to replace the rear tyres. They concluded that all four tyres have to be replaced on this model (AWD) as the rolling diameters of the worn tyres at the rear conflicted with the new front ones and this confused the AWD into thinking that 4 wheel drive was needed.

This is not a good idea when doing 70 down a motorway. Other owners need to know about this as Ford doesn't appear to have a solution - they have been informed about it by myself and the garage.

Two tyres with perfectly good tread had to be thrown away. If I have a punctures in a few months does it mean I have to buy four tyres?

This is a standard problem with virtually all 4WD vehicles where engagement of AWD is automatic. The answer is to rotate tyres front to back to even out the wear, so all then need to be replaced at the same time. But it's a big problem if you wreck one tyre when all the tyres are 2/3 worn because you then have to replace all of them.
