How can we insure a UK-registered car for use in Italy?

What is the best way to insure a UK-registered car in Italy for family holiday use with four named drivers? How does one avoid falling foul of the SORN and compulsory insurance regulations if the car were to be kept out of the UK for more than a year?

It is officially illegal to do what you propose. A car registered in one EU country can only be kept in another EU country for a maximum of six months of a year. The car must be insured in its country of registration. The paperwork for registering cars in Italy is not to be taken lightly.
