Why am I being quoted so much to repair an ESP fault on my Volkswagen Touran?

I am the owner of a 2006 Volkswagen Touran 1.9 litre MPV. I have had an ESP traction warning light on my dashboard for some time. To date I have had two mechanics have a look at the issue, but after trying their equipment on the car and checking various things they have both stated that they could not work out the problem. I was therefore advised to go to the main dealers in York. I have also been informed that the car will not pass the next MoT as changes involving warning lights have come into place.

I have now booked it in for a diagnostic at the main dealers but was surprised to find out that they charge £40.80 just to allow them to quote how much it cost to repair. Is this normal practice, and is this a common problem? As a woman on my own with very little car knowledge I do feel out of my depth. I would appreciate your thoughts.

This is a standard, extremely widespread problem due to a poor quality component fitted to VAG cars (and some other makes and models). A Volkswagen dealer can fix it using a kit and should charge between £250 and £400 for this work. If not, the ABS/ESP module can be sent to www.sinspeed.co.uk who can replace the faulty brake pressure valve inside it for £225 + VAT, but you will have to pay for removal of the module, refitting and any necessary reprogramming.

It is ironic and scandalous that EC component manufacturers have successfully lobbied the EC for a Directive to make these dodgy modules compulsory equipment on all new cars.
