What do you think of the Honda Civic 1.8i?

I'm going to take some time to go out and test drive the replacement for my Focus TDCi, the most expensive car to run I have ever had. So I need some advice please. My budget is £8000 and I don't want a diesel. I want a Focus-sized car of three years old or 30,000 miles with bulletproof reliability. So far the best I can think of is the previous shape Honda Civic 1.8. You said you got 45mpg out of it in your test. What do you think?

Actually, the Civic 1.8i is a very good idea, and it's chain cam as well. I don't know if you'll get 45mpg, as mine was on a 650-mile trip, but 40mpg is on the cards. You don't have the money for a 1.2TSI. The 1.4TSI 122s are mostly okay, but the more powerful turbo supercharged versions have had some problems.
