Real life high MPG and reliability - what's the best car?

Accompanying my new job is a 18000 to 20000 mile annual commute, mainly on motorways but also occasional A roads. I have a budget of up to £11500 but more important than the initial outlay is my main aim to keep future costs low.

This includes keeping an eye on insurance costs, as in a couple of years I may wish to add my 16.5 year old son to the policy. The car needs to be reasonably comfortable on the motorway, ideally with air conditioning and must be reliable.

On the short list, all with broker prices, are:

Hyundai i10 1.25 Comfort - by far the cheapest at £6815 but with real MPG in the mid to high 40s and, at 12, a highish insurance grouping.

Kia Rio 2 1.1 CDRi - currently with a manufacturer £1400 discount plus £99 insurance offer, bringing the price to a whisker over £11500. Insurance group 3. Real MPG seems to be around 60 but what worries me is Auto Express' long term road test which showed an overall of just 43.9! Is that likely?

Skoda Citigo 75 Greentech Elegance 5dr - around £10500 with a couple of options. Insurance group 2 and real MPG in the mid-50s.
Which would you go for and are there any better choices, new or used?

Don't believe the Auto Express fuel economy. The magazine is staffed by youngsters who drive pedal to the metal. Believe what real drivers are really getting in the real life mpg.

Another possibility is a Dacia Sandero 1.5 diesel, from £8,395. The 0.9 TCe 90 is cheaper at £7,395 and nicer to drive but won't get the same fuel economy.

The Citigo makes sense at under £7,575. It doesn't make any sense at all loaded up with extras.
