Looking for a cheap comfortable car to get to and from station

Hello HJ. I have a 1964 Series 2a Land Rover which i've been using to get to and from the station every day (about 5 miles a day). I've now decided that she is just too cold/old/unreliable to do that everyday, so i'm looking to buy something cheap (less than £1k), comfortable, refined, reliable, diesel and frugal (insurance, tax etc).

So far I've mainly been thinking French, as to my mind German/Italian marques are compromised by 'sportiness'!

On my list currently are Citroen C5s, Renault Lagunas, Peugeot 406s (but not many around) and Rover 75s.

Don't really care what size vehicle it is but generally it's the larger saloons which waft along unbothered by our lumpy old roads?

406 diesels are sought after and used up by taxi drivers. But now too old for many tax regs. So if you can find a good one, that's probably best. Rover 75CTDI probably your best investment because becoming a modern 'classic'.
