Apalling fuel economy from my Kia Cee'd auto

Back in August I traded in my trusty 10yr old 1.8 auto Avensis for an '09 1.6 auto Kia Cee'd. I love everything about the car except the awful real MPG. I am lucky to get 32mpg even though I am a sensible driver, most journeys are 10 miles plus, and motorways.

Is there something I should be getting checked out or have I bought a white elephant?

You should do better than that because the model is reasonably high geared in 4th, giving 25mph/1,000rpm. Is there a switch on the shifter to shut out o/d? If the engine is turning more than 2,000rpm to give you 50mph, then it's still in 3rd.
