Buying new small car but want automatic gearbox.

I wish to replace my wife's Citroen C3 with a new similarly sized car but require an automatic gearbox. Whilst impressed by reviews of Ford Fiesta, it seems that the automatic box available in only certain models is not considered 'fit for purpose'.

I don't understand your reference to 'fit for purpose'. The Fiesta was available as a 1.4 with 4-speed torque converter auto, will soon be available as a 1.6 with dual clutch Powershift and will eventually be available with a 1.0 Ecoboost and dual clutch Powershift.
