Steering wheel vibration on a CR-V

I've recently bought a 2.2 CDTi Honda CR-V on an 09 plate, ES model on standard wheels/ cross contact LX tyres. At speeds over an indicated 70mph there is quite pronounced steering wheel vibration. Whilst this is a good speed deterrent, I'm sure it shouldn't happen. I've had the wheels re-balanced with little effect.
It's not related to braking so I presume the discs are OK. Is it a case of having the alignment checked or is something more serious wrong?
