What econmy should I get from my Audi A1?

I recently purchased a Audi A1 Sportback 1.4 TFSI manual a couple of weeks ago after reading good road reports about the Audi in what car and mentioning over 50 mpg average, I drove the car last week to Devon it was late evening so I decided to use the A roads instead of motorways, and to be fair it is a great car.

The one concern I have is the economy - I drove at a steady 56 where possible in the gear indicated by the computer for the test i could only manage 38 mpg on main A roads and worst 24 mpg. I did manage 41 mpg but that was coasting down hill out of gear which you should never really do but I was desperate to achive something near 50 mpg surgested by all these test pilots.

Do you think there is problem, or are road test drives down hill off a cliff? How do I achieve this myself?
