Volkswagen Tiguan coil spring failure

I have just experienced a rear coil spring failure on my VW Tiguan, fortunately it fell off in the garage.

I have examined the spring and it looks like brittle failure due to breakdown of the protective coating and corrosion. My car is 3.5 years old with 22,000 miles only and I am surprised this could happen on a car this age. Does this happen often and should this be picked up on a service (corrosion that is) I have a service contract with VW and am less than pleased.

Typical of every make and model of European car. Does not seem to happen with Far Eastern cars, even those assembled in Europe.
