What caused my 1998 Volkswagen Passat's hazard lights to come on intermittently?

I have 1998 Volkswagen Passat diesel estate. Although it has 125,000 miles on the clock it does 50mpg on long journeys. Last week, on returning from a local shopping expedition at Reigate only 10 miles from home, the hazard lights came on intermittently. My regular garage was unable to explain the fault although they succeeded in preventing it happening again so far, but it leaves me worried. Have you an answer?

It will be an earthing fault. Moisture in a connection, or a rusted connection. First places to check are the side repeater indicators.
