Why does the warranty provided with a Volkswagen Golf we bought only cover a maximum claim of £300?

My wife recently bought a low mileage used Volkswagen Golf automatic from Partingtons of Woking. We were very impressed with the pre-handover service received, with various items such as broken wing mirror glass, electric mirror switch and bumper strip being replaced. Also a couple of small scuffs were repainted. The car was also serviced including an oil change. We were also told before purchasing that a first class six months warranty would be included. However, when I checked the ‘Warranty 2000’ schedule I was surprised to see that the maximum per claim is only £300 with a £30 excess, which works out at £270. In the warranty booklet it states that “in conjunction with Warranty 2000 your vehicle is protected against major mechanical breakdown.”

I cannot see how this would be possible with such a small maximum claim. I have left phone messages for Kevin Partington so that I can question this, but he has not replied so far. I also phoned ‘Warranty 2000’, but they did not want to help in any way, only to say that it is a dealer matter. What would be the best course of action to take?

Rest easy. You are protected by law for the first six months ownership against any fault that could have been present or been developing on the date of sale. And if the case went to court the onus would be on the dealer to prove conclusively that the fault had not been developing on the date of sale, which is impossible. Nothing to do with the joke warranty the dealer supplied with the car. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/
