Do all Volkswagen Passat CCs suffer from corrosion on the alloy wheels?

I have a Volkswagen Passat CC GT that is just over a year old. For some time I have been aware of rusting on all four wheel hubs which, apart from being unsightly, gives me cause for concern over possible long-term damage. The rust can quite clearly be seen through the spokes on the alloy wheels. I have spoken to two dealers about this. The first one said that all Volkswagens were the same and there was nothing to worry about. The second dealer said much the same except for offering to remove all the wheels and paint the hubs with heat resistant paint at a cost to me of £70 plus VAT.

This may not seem like a lot of money but, on a car which in its existing specification costs in excess of £30,000, seems to me like penny-pinching by the manufacturer. I think Volkswagen should be doing something about this. What are your thoughts on the matter please?

The solid iron hubs suffer surface rust that can bond with the alloy of the wheels but usually causes no harm; just looks unsightly. Some dealers will grind it off and paint the hubs with Sperex VHT paint (your choice of colour) FOC. Some, like yours, charge for it. But £70 is not a lot for the amount of work that will be involved, so they are still doing you a favour.
