Is it common for the Volkswagen sat nav system, as fitted to my 2010 Golf GTI, to malfunction?
I have a Golf GTI bought in March 2010 with Volkswagen satnav installed. It worked fine until a couple of months ago. At that time the direction arrow on the map went adrift. Often it was miles off the road I was on. Its got worse and often defaults to Regensburg in Germany. Yesterday, whilst on the M11, it had me somewhere in the English Channel. Even when it locates the right road (more or less) it rarely follows it, ploughing across the countryside or through houses. Volkswagen has replaced the aerial but its not made a difference. Now they want the car in to try the disc. Have you had anyone with a similar experience?

A satnav is a computer containing digitised mapping on a DVD Rom, an SD card or a hard disc, combined with GPS to show you where the car is on that digitised map. In bad weather or in towns with high buildings the GPS might not be able to see the three satellites it needs to see to position you, so the computer has to make a calculation. I would guess that is what is happening in your case. So I'd be looking at the GPS aerial.
