Should my son transfer the personalised number plate on his written-off BMW to another car?

My son’s old, special edition BMW has been written off after being ploughed into at speed on the M25 by an idiot who didn’t notice the stagnant queue of traffic. The insurance company has agreed that he can keep his personalised number plate but should he assign this to another vehicle before scrappage to prevent it being commandeered and re-sold?

He has to assign it to another car or to a retention certificate double quick before the car is officially destroyed or he will lose it.
