Ford Focus 'hunting' for revs

My son runs this petrol Focus on a tight budget and can't afford to throw it at his main Ford dealer to sort!
The engine "hunts" on tickover from cold, rather like too much choke in the old days.
Once the engine is warm the problem seems to go.
The car runs well geneally for its age.
What are the first things he should be investigating to try and solve the problem?

Look for moisture in the channel on the top of the engine that holds the spark plugs.
