Can I drive my car if it failed an MoT but still has a certificate within date?

I have had my car MoT'd 3 weeks earlier than the expiry date of current certificate, unfortunately the car failed its test. Can I legally drive the car for the next 3 weeks until current certificate expires?

This is something of a grey area in the MoT regulations, as you can drive your car if it still has an MoT certificate within date, as long as no dangerous faults have been found. However, this does not rule out the possibility of being stopped by the police and if they examine your car and find a fault that causes it to be unroadworthy, you could still be prosecuted.
