Should I buy a 17-year-old BMW MINI Cooper?

I am contemplating purchasing a 17-year-old BMW MINI Cooper convertible 1.6. It belongs to mature neighbour and is very much a second car for them. It has had one owner and done 63,000 miles. There are no advisories on the January MoT. It looks immaculate and drives well. The asking price is £3,500.

Are there any particular issues to look out for? Is the price reasonable?

You might be able to find one slightly cheaper but it's worth paying more for a cherished example. It's a modern classic so you'll need to be prepared for regular maintenance bills – as with any 17-year-old car, really. Make sure all the gears operate correctly without any whining or grinding. The clutch replacement on these is quite a big job, so if it's already been done that's a bonus. Watch out for signs it might need doing if not (if it's particularly heavy or has a high bite point, for example). Oil leaks are common and head gasket problems aren't unheard of, so check the levels under the bonnet and look for signs of coolant/oil mixing. Make sure all the electrics work and the roof goes up/down easily.
