Small end failure

I have a Ford Focus C-MAX 1.8 TDCi Zetec 48,000 miles with small end failure.

I bought the car from a main dealer as a Ford Demostrator at 10,000 miles so the mileage should be correct. The first two services were carried out by the main dealer, but the last one was done by a local established garage.

The small end bearings have suddenly failed, Ford and the main dealer have said they are unable to help. The local garage have removed the head and have confirmed small end failure.

I have challenged the garage about what type of oil was used at the last service and assured me that 5/30 was used. Would the incorrect oil cause this sort of damage to the engine or could there be some other reason?

The oil levels have always been checked and have never had a light come on

Incorrect oil cold have partially caused the problem but without having the oil tested you can't prove that the wrong oil was used.
